defining “definition”…

July 31, 2008

Definition of the word “definition”:

A definition of a concept is that which explicitly states the assumptions that completely identify the concept. All other properties of the concept are derivable from the assumptions fundamental to the definition.

Does this definition of the word “definition” satisfy the definition of “definition”? Which is like asking, “Does the definition of, say, ‘idiot’, satisfy the definition of ‘idiot’?” ‘Obviously’ it does for by virtue of being ‘idiot’ the word satisfies the definition of ‘idiot’. Also, because a thing cannot but contain itself – by virtue of being the definition of a “definition” the definition of a “definition” satisfies the definition of a “definition”.
